Exhale and let the raised arm slowly float down to your side as if on a cloud. Alternate this position by raising the opposite arm with the same breathing pattern. Inhale as you raise the arm and exhale as you lower it. This completes one set. You can repeat as many sets as you wish.

This posture also helps strengthen your connection between heaven and earth. The Taoists believe that the human form is one of the major connection points between these two powerful forces of nature. You are actually becoming a battery of sorts as you absorb energy through the palms of your hands when they are in the extended position. This posture is also closely related to the accumulation and storing of energy in your Tan Tien that in turn contributes to your increased stamina and vitality. After some time you will be able to feel sensations in your palms as your body gets used to absorbing energy through your palms. The emotion of worry tends to affect the stomach, so we can use a sacred sound to help neutralize it. There are two types of worry. Situational worries like our bills, our job, or any other daily-life type things. And then there are worries of a compassionate nature, like for our loved ones. So there are two sounds that you use. For the first, the situational worries, the sound is “SHU.” The sound for compassionate worries is “HAW.” But “Haw” is not so much a verbal sound as an internal vibration, so it sounds like you are trying to clear your throat.

Form 4. Looking Back to Alleviate the Five Strains and Seven Impairments

The “Five Strains” are activities that cause strain on the five Yin organs: the heart, spleen, lungs, kidneys, and liver. They are excessive standing, walking, sitting, lying down, and prolonged use of the eyes. Most of these are related to occupational strains, and prolonged use of the eyes can be due to television, computer work, or video games, all of which are prevalent in our modern lifestyles.

The “Seven Impairments” affect the constitution of the body: like overeating, fury, cold weather, sorrow, anxiety, laziness (lack of natural early morning energy), and extreme changes in temperature. In addition, this form helps neutralize the effects experienced from great physical or emotional shock. Things like car accidents, violence against your person, or the detoxification process from drug abuse.

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, knees relaxed, back straight, head suspended, and your tongue placed gently on the roof of your mouth. Your hands are placed on your lower abdomen with your thumbs touching at your navel and your right fingers covering your left fingers (the same as when practicing Tan Tien breathing).

As you inhale, your arms open gently as you pull your shoulder blades together and twist your arms so your little fingers are turned up and out. At the same time your head turns evenly to the right, just to a point of comfort, and then your eyes look over your right shoulder (Figure 10).
